Hubert Winfield “Rube” Williams

An easy going Texan, Hubert “Rube” Williams was also known as a fearless player. He was a key member on the winning West team in the infamous 1933 East-West series, in spite of suffering a broken leg in the second game of the rough best-of-three.

Williams, an 8-goal player, was a familiar face on the tournament circuit winning the 1928 Junior Championship (now known as the Silver Cup), the 1930 Monty Waterbury Cup, and was a finalist in the 1932 U.S. Open.
A talented horseman, he was well-known for purchasing prospective polo ponies and turning them into top prospects. After retiring from polo, Williams became a celebrated horse trainer on the East Coast.
