Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame
Beatrice
Beatrice was a warrior on and off the polo field. The gallant bay mare excelled in three International series for the U.S., owned by Stephen “Laddie” Sanford and played by Dev Milburn (1924 Westchester Cup) and Winston Guest (1928 Cup of the Americas, 1930 Westchester Cup) all three men in the Hall of Fame. She also played in the 1921 Westchester Cup for the British team.

Adding to her laurels, Beatrice was a real war hero. She had served as an artillery horse and an officer’s charger in the British Army during the first World War and was awarded a gold medal, which she later wore pinned on her saddle pad while playing for the U.S. international team.
