Sweet Be
Sweet Be (New Windsor x Our Boy’s Beauty) was a gray, thoroughbred mare, trained by the legendary horseman Cecil Smith and his son, Charles. She had incredible potential, but “Because we were in the horse business” as Charles relates, she was sold to Dick Latham when she was just 4 and Latham generously made Sweet Be available for Charles to play.
Proving herself to be speedy, handy and reliable the hard-working mare was a mainstay for Hall of Famer Charles Smith in the 1970s as he played her in all the major tournaments, including the U.S. Open, USPA Gold Cup, Silver Cup, and Butler Handicap, among others.
Her standout performances earned Sweet Be numerous Best Playing Awards, highlighted by the Hartman Award in the 1976 U.S. Open and Best Playing pony of the 1976 Camacho Cup.
